RETREATING AND RESTING TO RESTORE….

THE GREY ROOM AT THE BALLYMALOE HOUSE FOR THE WEEKEND BELONGED TO ME
THE GREY ROOM AT THE BALLYMALOE HOUSE FOR THE WEEKEND BELONGED TO

WEEK EIGHT AT THE BALLYMALOE COOKERY SCHOOL STARTED WITH THINKING MAYBE I SHOULD JUST SKIP CLASSES FOR A FEW DAYS OR EVEN PACK UP MY THINGS AND HEAD TOWARD HOME BACK IN AMERICA.

THERE WASN’T ANY ONE THING THAT I CAN PUT MY FINGER ON THAT WOULD MAKE MY BRAIN THINK THAT WAY.   BELIEVE IT WAS MANY THINGS ALL TOGETHER.  I HAD HAD A GREAT DAY IN THE KITCHEN FRIDAY MAKING DUCK WITH ORANGE.  TRUELY ENJOYED VISITING THE FARMERS MARKET ON SATURDAY MORNING AND ACTUALLY KNEW A PERSON WHO WASN’T A STUDENT OR VENDOR!  HAD A LOVELY LUNCH AT SAGE WHILE IN MIDLETON.   HOOKED UP WITH SOME OTHER STUDENTS AND TIMMY AND CONTINUED TO IMPROVE ON MAKING SOUR DOUGH BREAD IN KITCHEN THREE.  EVEN ON SUNDAY GOT UP WANTING TO MAKE  PIZZA DOUGH EARLY IN THE DAY AND ENDED UP SHARING THAT WITH A FEW OTHERS FOR LUNCH IN THE HOUSE.   PLUS GOT CAUGHT UP ON LAUNDRY AND FILING OF RECIPES!!

ALL OF THIS COULD HAVE BEEN THE TRIGGER THAT CHALLENGED  ME ON SUNDAY NIGHT AND MONDAY MORNING.  MY BRAIN WAS JUST ON OVERLOAD AND JUST WANTED TO  MAKE A RUN FOR IT!   LIKE IT WAS SAYING NO MORE!!  A PAST STUDENT AT BALLYMALOE WROTE IN HER BLOG THAT SHE HAD COME TO THE REALIZATION THAT  SHE COULD DO ANYTHING…JUST NOT EVERYTHING AT ONCE.   SUCH A TRUE STATEMENT.

IT IS REALLY HARD TO STAY IN THE PRESENT MOMENT HERE WITH ALL OF THE INFORMATION COMING AT US AND KNOWING THAT FINALS ARE JUST DOWN THE ROAD!  ONE HAS TO REALLY TRUST THAT WHEN THAT DAY OR WEEK COMES WE WILL BE READY IF WE HAVE DONE EVERYTHING NEEDED DAILY.  RIGHT??

SO HAPPY THAT I WAS ABLE TO PUSHED THROUGH THOSE THOUGHTS AND WAS ABLE TO PUT “MIND OVER MATTRESS” AND SHOW UP ON MONDAY , TUESDAY,  WEDNESDAY,  THURSDAY AND FINALLY FRIDAY MORNING OF WEEK EIGHT.   WOULD HAVE MISSED OUT ON SO MUCH.   LIKE WATCHING THE BUTCHERING OF A DEER, TASTING WINE OUT OF DIFFERENT STYLES OF GLASSES AND REALIZING THAT GLASSWARE DOES MAKE A DIFFERENCE.  MAKING BRIOCHE AND FLAKY PASTRY SUCCESSFULLY.   GETTING TENS ON SUCH RECIPES AS THAI CHICKEN WITH CORIANDER SOUP AND GOAT CHEESE AND THYME SOUFFLE.   PLUS EVEN HAD TIME TO THINK ABOUT THE MEANING OF “DAL”  IN INDIAN RECIPES,  AS WE SPENT SEVERAL DAYS ON VEGETARIAN MEALS.   HOWEVER…..

KNOWING MYSELF REALLY WELL, IT WAS TIME TO GIVE MY BRAIN A RETREAT AWAY FROM BEING TOTALLY OVERWHELMED AND STIMULATED.  TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING CAN JUST BE TOO MUCH ON THE BRAIN.

SO OFF I WENT TO THE BALLYMALOE HOUSE JUST ABOUT TWO MILES FROM THE COOKERY SCHOOL.    ABOVE WAS MY ROOM AND THE FRESH FLORAL ON THE BEDROOM TABLE.  BELOW…. JUST A BEAUTIFUL END OF A HALLWAY ALLOWING THE ROOFTOPS AND HILLSIDES TO CALL YOUR NAME.  (JUST TRUST ME THE HILLSIDES ARE THERE)

ABOVE WAS THE MORNING VIEW FROM MY WINDOW ON SATURDAY MORNING.  I SLEPT SO WELL!

WISH I COULD HAVE TAKEN A PHOTO TO SHARE OF THIS MORNING’S VIEW OUT THE WINDOW AROUND 4:30AM.  I WOKE UP WARM AND DECIDED TO OPEN THE WINDOW FOR A LITTLE FRESH AIR .  THERE WERE JUST MILLIONS OF STARS IN THE SKY!!  THE OUTLINE OF THE TREES FROM THE LOW CLOUDS AND STARLIGHT WAS JUST BREATHTAKING!   NEVER HAVE SEEN SUCH A SIGHT…JUST A GIFT FROM GOD FOR MY MEMORY BANK.  (UNLESS YOU SAW IT ALSO)

IT IS NOW AROUND NOON ON SUNDAY AND SINCE  I AM ABLE TO WRITE THESE WORDS OF REFLEXION, IT AFFIRMS THAT MY BRAIN IS NOW WELL RESTED AND RESTORED.

CHEERS

P.S.  ALMOST FORGOT TO MENTION THE SING ALONG WITH RORY ALLEN, LUKA BLOOM AND A ROOM FULL OF VERY TALENTED IRISH FOLK LAST NIGHT IN THE PARLOR UNTIL 1:30AM…. WAS SO REALLY GOOD FOR MY SOUL :-)
